Description THE LAST GREAT ELK. 1991. The last Great Irish Elk probably passed into history about 10,000 years ago but in Ireland when I was young there were Great Elk horns in so many mansions and old Anglo-Irish houses including Castletown House -and of course, there is an entire skeleton mounted regally in our National History Museum. Well worth a visit too. This work was inspired by a dream where I was one of a band of hunters who encountered a Great Elk and stood transfixed as it faded away in the mist and melted back into the snowy landscape, out of sight forever.
